Pass to self

I read some older posts on this topic, but they were inconclusive on this scenario, which did occur to me today:

A1 in the frontcourt, having ended his dribble, attempts to pass, but the ball slips out of his hands and goes straight up. He catches the ball without any of his feet having moved.

I did not call a travel or illegal dribble, because what happened did not fit those definitions. (of course everyone screaming for something) Tonight I saw in the rules that a pass is defined as to another player...but there are no Rule 9 violations for an illegal pass.

So.....??

This is not a travel, this is a fumble. The only thing that he cannot legally do is dribble again, at least not until the ball touches or is touched by another player.

Not exactly the same, but ...

4.44.3 SITUATION C: (a) A1 tosses the ball from one hand to the other while keeping his/her pivot foot in contact with the floor; RULING: Legal in (a).
