NCAA Men's/Women's uniform numbers.
 

This school year is first year that the NCAA Men's and Women's Rules adopted the NBA/QNBA and FIBA numbering system. I am watching the Navy at Youngstown State (Class of 1980: GO PENGUINS!) and Navy has three Players what were previously Illegal Numbers: 7, 17 and 99 (Pete Maravich and John Havlicek of the Celtics, and George Mikan of the Lakers).

I'm curious to see how college officials will adjust to this change. Maybe, once NCAA gets used to the change, it will also trickle down into NFHS.

Instructions have been provided to officials. Adjustments should have been made back around Veteran's Day week.

Two Phase Reporting ...
 

Have to go back to "two phase" reporting.

I have illegal numbers in my middle school games all the time.

Locally we don't enforce uniform (not equipment) rules in our middle school games (home need not wear white, illegal numbers allowed, duplicate numbers allowed, shorts don't have to match colors).

How is this not viewed as twenty-five, or fifty two?

Scorekeeper must expect all two phase reporting.

Similar to the old one hand reporting (two separate signals) but with one sometimes using two hands for none, one, or both, of the two signals.

I don’t know why the sideways fingers for 6/7/8/9 aren’t the norm. Allows for single-phase reporting to continue. Would also seem easy for scorers to get used to if you just give them a chance.

Unusual Numbers ...
 

I'd like to see a copy of those instructions especially since these "unusual" numbers may eventually trickle down to the NFHS.

This is because the official combines a visible and verbal signal. FIBA resolves this conundrum by having officials display the tens digit facing away from the scorer (with the backs of the hands facing the scorer), and then having the officials flip their hands forward for the ones digit..

2. Slowly state the color of the jersey and the player’s number
who fouled. Report the foul to the table with two hands,
indicating the number of the player who fouled. When the
number of the player who fouled cannot be made with two
hands (ex. 49, 67, 83) the official will signal the first number
followed by the second number while clearly verbalizing
the number to the scorer. The palms of the hands showing
the numbers should always face the scorer.
