The school's response is even worse... the tape shows obvious expletives and inappropriate, abusive gestures, and when publicly warned, the students doubled-down.

Quote:

While we regret the role that our students played in this incident, we wish we would have had an opportunity to address the situation when called up to do so. We have no doubt that our students would have responded to the staff’s direction and been able to remain present to support their fellow student-athletes.
When they were warned against it, they IMMEDIATELY shouted out expletives, which is plainly visible on the video. The students flipped the bird and double-bird to officials, administrators, and game administration. There should be ZERO tolerance for this, and yet they stand behind their students and their poor sportsmanship.

Students shouldn't have even been able to climb into the stands behind the benches after the section was dispersed, they should have been forced to leave the gym. Granted the score was a blow-out, but I think the failure to leave the gym by their students should result in an investigation and sanctions against the school.

Their response and post on Facebook was unacceptable.

Their response was tone-deaf, considering we can see some bad behavior when they were removed. Of course, we cannot completely hear anything, but the administration should have been standing right there. I have had many student sections that had administrators (even when the visiting team is there and their administrators are standing right there) monitoring the situation. Often we just have to look over there and the staff is on top of it. Looks like no one was there to solve the issue previously.

Peace

I agree that many times, if not most of the time, it's handled by good game management. But I've also seen some really bad behavior too, including times when the visiting team's administration was involved in the abusive activity (on one occasion, a visiting principal was ejected from the contest by game management). Normally it's a bad apple here or there, but there are some schools where it always seems to be a good portion of the school, which leads me to think it's the administration not setting the right expectations.

I have heard an AD come up to the crew between quarters and say "just let me know when it's time for them to leave", referring to a couple of rowdy fans.

In this particular case, the announcers make reference to the "BS" chant from that section, and you can see expletives being shouted by various fans as well.

Heave Ho ...

I'm not sure that I would sound my whistle and give the "heave ho" signal to the entire student section. Certainly not a good look.

I would continue to strongly encourage the site director to clear the students himself, and if he fails to comply, I might threaten to hold up the game until he does so, possibly threatening that my partner and I would wait in the locker room until such occurs.

Another possibility (last resort), if I'm 100% sure it's the home students, I possibly might consider threatening the site director with charging technical fouls to the home team for each continuing unsporting comment if he doesn't comply with my request to remove the students.

In honesty, I'm not 100% exactly sure what I would do ("hadda" be there) but I would consider doing almost anything short of sounding my whistle and unilaterally "tossing" the entire student section.

But something certainly had to be done during that game that night, something over and above a simple report to my assigner and the state later that night.
