Players vs. Fans/Bench Personnel

This is why I was an a-hole when it came to benches and fans talking to players on the court.

That kid from Eastern likely needs to be suspended for some time. You cannot come off the floor and strike a fan. Now the fan I am sure said something that was out of pocket, but for future situation the something has to be done bigger than just a game or two suspension.

The Austin Rivers and Mo Bamba situation has to have something big there too. There seems like there is this trend to fight over little things now. This is about the 2nd NBA fight of some kind in the last week and they had some others this year.

But all I am seeing across the country are video of fights for all kinds of reasons. It is happening in places that you would not "think" it would happen, before and after games.

I worked with a guy this afternoon that had a high school game a few weeks ago where there was a fight in the handshake line. A kid pushed then punched an opponent. That kid was kicked off the team, but this was one of 50 other incidents.

Peace

A attended a college game today where the crew twice asked law enforcement to address fans (mostly ex-players from the home team) who were sitting on bleachers right on the front row next to the court. They were getting into dialogues with visiting players The police did not seem to want to engage.

Talking to the crew after the game they said visiting player accused one of the spectators of threatening to kill him. I do know there was a visiting player who was extremely upset at one point in the game.

One of the crew will be back next Saturday and he is really not looking forward to being back in that environment.

At what point would you refuse to continue the contest if Law Enforcement/Game Administration was not handling the situation as you requested?

Yesterday's Purdue @ Indiana game had several Indiana fans throwing stuff onto the court, and the public address announcement informed fans the next item to be thrown onto the court would result in a technical foul on Indiana.

I know officials are cautioned not to penalize teams for actions that might not be fully attributable to them - but perhaps that's the option that needs to be used if game management won't do anything?

(Of course, if the game is out of hand, it may not help and may just stir things up - in this case, Purdue and Indiana were within arm's distance of each other most of the game...)

I guess I would have to be in this situation to know at that moment.

Yesterday's crew chief told both coaches he was weighing that as an option.

This is a guy who played D1 football, is a high school AD, coached HS football, and whose father was a major D1 conference basketball supervisor, so he is familiar with and sensitive to all aspects of athletics. That tells me the situation must have been pretty bad.

(Dr J, you have a relative who knows this individual very well)

And another example from an NBA game.
