Big News In Connecticut ...
The CIAC (our state interscholastic sports governing body) has adopted a new policy for selection and assignment of officials to work the annual CIAC girl's and boy’s tournaments. The major change is that the coaches will no longer select the officials. Rather, the CIAC has appointed the local Connecticut IAABO Boards to select their tournament officials.

Coaches were selecting the state tournament officials? Wow. When would they even have the time to evaluate qualified officials? (not even considering whether or not they were qualified to make such assessments)

Unbelievably, the coaches almost always made good choices. Only a few times over the years have I looked at the tournament list, scratched my head, and said to myself, "Who? How? Why?". As much as I hate to say this, I wonder if this will result in more technical fouls being given to head coaches, if you know what I mean? |
Pro Choice ...
This very recent change follows a change from a few years ago where officials in the past could work both boys and girls tournament games if selected; to our new policy now where selected officials must choose to work either boys or girls tournament games, not both. That change, implemented as a "surprise" by our local board executive committee, pissed off a lot of our local guys that led to some very long and "spirited" business meetings.
