A question for the esteemed forum. Are these legal plays?

a) Player A1 legally throws the ball in at the division line after the half. He then proceeds to run, out of bounds, almost to the baseline before coming in bounds to escape notice.

b) Player A1, without the ball, approaches B2 who has established legal guarding position along the baseline. A1 runs out of bounds to avoid the pick, reestablishes legal in-bound position, and receives a pass.

So I guess what I'm asking in both cases, is can a player run out of bounds intentionally to gain an advantage? What do I got?

In both cases, the book call is a technical foul, with no warning. Unless the player's actions lead directly to a basket though, most officials will warn the player first before nailing them with a T.

Rules references are rulebook R10-3-4 amd casebook 10.3.4SitB.

a, see case 10-3-3b 2003-04

b, rule 10-3-3 should cover this also. To avoid being defended is clear unauthorized reason to leave the floor.

Both cases assess the T.

Jurassic mistakenly got art 4 in Rule 10 Sec 3, should be Art3.

JR -- In the second case, I think I'm seeing the advantage in receiving the pass, whether or not the basket goes. I think I'll call it when the ball is caught, without warning.

In the first case, I would warn first, unless I see some obvious advantage gained.

[/B][/QUOTE]If A1 shakes the defender by going OOB around the screen, and A1 then gains an advantage that you think could possibly lead to a basket(in your opinion), I agree that you don't want to take the chance that A1 might score, and that you let A1 away with that to allow that score.

I whack 'em both without even thinking about it. Of course, you guys already knew that.
