I know that the OhioHSAA, MichiganHSAA, and the FloridaHSAA have mandatory online state rules meetings for both HCs and Officials which spell cover this nonsense.

HCs are adults and are very capable of knowing how to conduct him/herself as well as how his/her Players are to conduct themselves, as well as knowing what is legal and what is illegal apparel well before the season starts.

The Pregame Meeting with the HCs should be: "Hello Coach I am John Smith. Have a good game." And quite possibly a reminder to signal which type of TO they want when a TO is requested.

I am done ranting. Everyone have a good weekend.

I agree. I get what the purpose of asking the legally and properly equipped question is (to avoid liability in a litigious society) but it is stupid to make the officials ask this question at every game. The Coach is not going to answer "No".

Wonder what would happen if from the beginning of our jurisdiction (walk onto court fifteen minutes before game time) we could assess one indirect technical foul to the head coach for any infractions of said rules that we discover throughout the game.

After sitting on the bench for a game, or two, those coaches would be damn sure that they both understood the rules and enforced such with their players.

Just say'in.

I forgot that one can't issue and indirect technical foul without also issuing a direct technical foul.

After watching the opponent's best free throw shooter attempt two free throws, and then having to sit on the bench, after a game, or two, of doing this, those coaches would be damn sure that they both understood the rules and enforced such with their players.

Too punitive? Too harsh?

There isn't a purpose to asking if the teams are legally equipped. Its not like other sports where you gotta look for certifying stamps on everything and no broken helmets. If a team has an illegal uniform, there isn't anything that can be done about it by the coach in almost all cases unless theres spare legal uniforms on site. They'll eat the T most of the time. Everything else on the illegal equipment docket we dont let the player play until the offending items are removed. They're things that a cursory glance will catch. Only thing that really needs done for basketball is have coaches remind players and parents/guardings that if they get new piercings before scrimmages start, they'll be riding the bench until the studs can come out.

I agree. That's why this question shouldn't exist for basketball. It's good that.college basketball officials don't have to go through this.

Just so you know, we ask this question in all sports at the NF level. Every single one that I am aware of asks a similar if not the same question to the head coach. Doubt that is going to change because some do not like it.

Peace

Not a real big deal, even if it seems so impersonal and boilerplate. At minimum, it's gives some recognition of the captains by the fans as they step away from their teammates for a minute, or so.

I never once in my career asked a coach if his/her players were properly/legally equipped. I have frequently told captains to make sure their teammates were with specific reference to the item I was concerned about.

Ive never asked in basketball. We dont do coaches meetings here. We just introduce ourselves when we go across to the table before toss. Vaguely remember doing it in softball.
