Here is a question from an NCAA Refresher Test.

As A1 release his try, B1 blocks the ball. A1 recovers the ball and returns to the floor, where B1 causes a held ball with 5 seconds on the shot clock. The possession arrow favours Team A. The official awards the ball to Team A with no reset of the shot clock. Is the official correct?

My answer would be NO. Please confirm or correct. Thanks.

BTW, the answers were not provided.

I vote yes, he's correct. A has team control before the held ball. No reset.

Jay,

Ask yourself this-- If the shot had missed the rim and A2 gained possession of the ball, would you reset the shot clock? NO. The shot clock does not reset unless there is a change of possession or the shot hits the rim. Therefore, since the arrow favored Team A when the held ball occurred, there would not be a reset. They will only have the remaining time on the clock after the throw in.

My thinking was team control ends when the shot is released.

That's right, but A1 "recovered" it, meaning A has the ball & there's no reset on the held ball.

The shot attempt by A1 MUST HIT THE RIM for there to be a reset, in this situation.

I found this link from the NCAA site that seems to suggest we should reset the shot clock. Check page 34, #D6

The original play had A2 recovering the ball before B2 tied it up. If A2 & B2 take control together off the shot you reset. If B2 recovers the ball before A2 ties it up A gets the ball (on the arrow) and you reset the shot clock.

Of course, these are NCAA rules. When states use shot clock as optional rule for HS, the rules sometimes vary and this is one that I know I have seen cited in the past with a diferent interpretation. If I remember correctly, this was a relatively recent change for NCAA (last 5 years?), and some states may have HS shot clock rules that predate this change.

I'm still not convinced, but I think you guys have just about beaten me down.
