Rule 10 Fighting Penalty Summary

a. Players on the court:
(1) Corresponding number from each team – double flagrant fouls, all participants are disqualified, no
free throws are awarded, ball is put in play at the point of interruption (use the alternating possession arrow
to resume play if there is no player/team control).
(2) Numbers of participants are not corresponding – Flagrant fouls and disqualification for all
participants, two free throws are awarded for the offended team for each additional player, offended
team awarded a division line throw in.

b. Bench personnel leaving the team bench during a fight or when a fight may break out:
(1) Do not participate in the fight – nonparticipants are assessed flagrant fouls and disqualified. The
head coach is assessed a maximum of one indirect technical foul (regardless of the number leaving the
bench). If the number leaving the bench for each team is corresponding, no free throws are awarded,
and the ball is put in play at the point of interruption. If the number leaving the bench for each team is
unequal, a maximum of two free throws are awarded the offended team, followed by a division line
throw-in opposite the table.
(2) Participate in the fight – all participants are assessed flagrant fouls and disqualified. The head coach
is assessed one indirect technical foul for each person leaving the bench and participating in the fight. If
the number leaving the bench for each team is corresponding, no free throws are awarded, and the ball
is put in play at the point of interruption. If the number leaving the bench for each team is unequal, two
free throws are awarded the offended team for each additional person leaving the bench, followed by a
division line throw-in opposite the table.

Near Impossible Task ...
 

Without the benefit of a replay monitor, not allowed for NFHS game officials to use, this is a near impossible task.

I'm not certain that all ten players fought, that all bench personnel came off both benches, and not sure if any bench personnel fought.

The game officials probably did the right thing, ultimately leaving penalties up to the state association, who would have the benefit of a video replay to sort things out.

According to this news report, TSSAA removed both teams from the playoffs; 24 total players were "ejected" and will sit for 2 games, both schools fined.

What a mess. I'm glad to see the crew suspended the game.

Tennessee State Association Appeal ...
 

Originally both teams were disqualified from the tournament.

After the first appeal, Black had only one eligible player (White had, I believe, two), and being behind, had no chance to win the game, counting as a White victory.

After a second appeal the last 1:38 was played three days after the original game, 3 on 3 (game started with two technical foul free throws by White), after six total players were reinstated (not ejected) by the Tennessee state association, a few were reinstated only after the second appeal. White won.

I'm guessing that no (or few) bench personnel participated in the fight, as both coaches were at the 3 on 3 game (not ejected).

Something about White being able to use junior varsity players in the next round. Maybe this wasn't allowed in the 3 on 3 game (at expense of a technical foul, i.e., adding name to scorebook) because Tennessee tournament rosters must be "set" before each game (guessing)?

Agree. Without the benefit of a replay monitor, they had a choice to guess, or to suspend the game. Why guess in a win or go home game?

I have a problem remembering colors and numbers as I move to the table to report a "regular" double foul.

No way will I remember, in the heat of a fight, colors and numbers of players on the court fighting (I might get some of those player fighters correct on a good day, i.e., a day that I win Wordle), bench personnel leaving the bench to fight, and bench personnel leaving the bench to only watch.
