Connecticut Tougher On Coaches ...

The CIAC has revised it's guidelines regarding the ejection of coaches.

In the past, if a coach was ejected he would have to sit out the next game at that level, and any games at all other levels (varsity, junior varsity, freshman) during that time period.

The guideline had now been changed to two games at that level, and any games at all other levels during that time period.

Penalties don't reset at the end of the season, and can carry over to the next season.

Several years ago we had a subvarsity official toss a knucklehead varsity head coach who was sitting and complaining on the bench during the junior varsity game. Said knucklehead coach had to sit out his subsequent varsity game that night (and the next junior varsity game). The subvarsity official received a standing ovation at our next local meeting.

Had this happened more recently, the penalty would been doubled.

Good for Connecticut.

PIAA implemented the "supplemental DQ" last year and they have really been pushing it on us this year.

We utilized it once last year when we tossed a kid and he decided to give the double bird to the entire crowd on his way to the bench.

The supplemental disqualification rule is for any coach or player ejected from a game for confronting, contacting or addressing a coach, player or official using foul or vulgar language, ethnic or racially insensitive comments or physical contact. The player or coach would be ejected from the game and then suspended for the next two games.

IMO, this leaves a little bit of judgement up to the officials and actions that fall under flagrant DQ's should be 2 additional to the current automatic. No place in the game. So again, good on Connecticut for updating their current penalty rather than adding something else on top an potentially confusing everyone.

Interestingly, as I was cleaning out my office due to closing my business, I came across an old ejection report I had sent to the OHSAA. I had done a freshman game at the end of the season. My partner and I were both highly thought of V level officials. Due to the expected mismatch of programs, the assignor wanted V officials to do the game.

The game didn't go as expected. The small semi rural team blew the large catholic school team out of the gym in the first half. Of course, that head coach blamed us and my partner issued him a T in the second quarter. Fast forward to the end of the game. The word had gone around this small school's building that their freshman team was beating this monster program and everyone still in the building came down for the second half, so the gym was packed.

Fast forward to the end of the game. St Monster has just taken their first lead with :30 left. The Farmers hit a 30 footer at the buzzer to win the game as pandemonium breaks out in the gym. I was waiting at the endline for my partner as he waded through the crowd and past St Monster's bench. I hear a bit of commotion and then partner (who is 6'2") comes into view with a funny look on his face. I asked him what that was about and he said the HC said, "You guys F**king Suck!" I walked back over and said to the coach, "Since we haven't left the court yet we still have jurisdiction. So, for what you just said to my partner, have another T which means you are officially ejected."

OHSAA fined him
Suspended him 2 games (the first two the next season)
And required him to take an on line coaching ethics class before he could coach again.

And that was a about 12 years ago.

That was the only coaches ejection of my high school career.

For this alone, my nomination for Post O' The Month.

We also have "The Farmers" here in the rural parts of Connecticut, where John Deere tractors take up two parking spaces in the school parking lots.

Like everybody else we also have "Saint Monsters", Cathodic schools that can accept students from all towns and cities, but are not allowed to "recruit" athletes (wink, wink, nod, nod).
