How Many Points ???

Watching Greg Austin’s Five Play Friday on You Tube today. Situation where throwin from near division line goes directly into the basket. Obviously a throwin violation, no basket, and ball at spot of original throwin.

Somebody asked what if the throwin was touched by a tall defender closely guarding the inbounder with arms raised high, a defender who was inbounds well outside of the three point arc.

Basket counts.

Two points, or three points?

Two points. You can only get three points if the "throw" is from inbounds.

5-2-1 .... "from the field..."

Thanks bob jenkins.

5-2-1: A successful try, tap or thrown ball from the field by a player who is located behind the team’s own 19-foot, 9-inch arc counts three points. A ball that touches the floor, a teammate inside the arc, an official, or any other goal from the field counts two points for the team into whose basket the ball is thrown.

Two points, because a throw-in is neither a try from beyond 3-point distance, nor a throw from the field (as it is not inbounds). Therefore, a throw-in fails to meet any criterion necessary for awarding 3 points.

It is also not a throw-in once the ball is touched by a player inbounds. The throw-in ends at that point. Therefore, the throw-in definition has absolutely no impact on the ruling when the deflected ball passes through the basket.

Further, a throw-in that goes through the basket is zero points, and a violation.

And if the throwin goes directly into the defending team's basket, it's zero points for the defending team. Can you tell that recreational marijuana became legal in Connecticut this past Thursday?

No. It seems about the same as most of your posts.

Great observation because I choose not to partake.

I just thought it odd to assign a value of zero points.
