Fun With A Reverse Layup …

IAABO Make The Call Video

Is this illegal or incidental contact? This is a men's collegiate play. Observe this play and make a judgment as to whether this is correctly ruled illegal contact. Are the officials in good position to make a proper ruling?

Two choices: This is correctly ruled a foul. This is incidental contact.

My comment: This is incidental contact. Offensive player’s own momentum caused him to stumble.

I do not see anything that stands out as a foul here. It is also going away from the C in this case, so he has to be sure to put air in the whistle. Now it could be a foul if the arm was hit by the defender, but not seeing that clearly. So I tend to go with nothing on plays like this for the most part. But that does not mean the official is wrong, the video just is not a great determiner of what happened from that angle.

Peace

My only concern was the right leg of the defender possibly contacting the left leg of the still airborne shooter. Because the airborne shooter was able to land and stay upright, I decided to go with incidental.

I guess, but I see nothing that that was the cause of the defender. That is why angles mean everything. And since this is a college game, that is considered marginal at best. Maybe his angle showed something else (and it could have) but the leg is not what I am seeing for contact purposes.

We don't have the same angle as the center official.

It is possible the defender made illegal contact when he turned the right side of his body into the shooter.

I agree, this is all about angles. It very much might have been an easier foul from his angle. I just do not see it from "our" angle. This would be a play at a camp I would ask the official about and his explanation would tell the story for me.

Peace

From this angle, looks like a foul. Whenever a defender turns like that — red flag for illegal contact.

All true but there has to be contact. The defender could have completely missed the shooter and the shooter is trying to stay under control. So it could be a foul and might actually be a foul, but that angle does not show what the official saw either. He is in a good position to make the call, but all contact is not a foul either.

Peace

IAABO Play Commentary Correct Answer: This is incidental contact.

This is a very tough play. 60% of the individuals who responded indicated that this is incidental contact. The offensive player is driving toward the basket away from the Center official. The Lead has a good angle to view this play, which appears to be incidental contact and should not have been ruled a foul.

Here is the breakdown of the IAABO members that commented on the video: This is incidental contact 58% (including me). This is correctly ruled a foul 42%.

Been semi-offline for a couple of weeks.

I'm with Raymond...there is simply no way to tell if there was a foul or not on this play with the camera angle given. To declare otherwise would be no better than the Trail making the decision on a play all the way across the court with a bad angle.

I agree with the angles discussion, but from the camera angle I have nothing.
