NCAAW NCG: Arizona-Stanford

Opening tip: you blowing that back as the U1?

ODog Sun Apr 04, 2021 08:42pm

Nope. It was straight and high enough, and it hit the jumpers before it hit the floor. Good enough for me. The fact the players made it look awful is not relevant. You throw it any higher than 8 feet in a girls/women's game, it will always turn out like that anyway.

Video?

I ask because I hadn't seen ANY NCAAW playoff games (until I turned to this one with about 30 seconds to go).

(And, top be clear, I've seen less than 10 minutes of NCAAM games)

I do not watch much women's basketball at all. So no video unless someone else has the ablity to show video. I only hear about these situations after the fact. I record almost every NCAA tournament game on the Men's side and watch many games myself. So, more video.

Peace

Nice video SC Official. Thanks.

Why was this jump ball re-jumped?

The toss was straight. The toss was high enough (higher than both players could jump). The tossing officials didn't get in anybody's way. The toss wasn't bad such that it caused either jumper to violate. Players were facing the correct direction.

Both jumpers mistimed the jump ball, not due to a bad toss by the tossing official, but because the players screwed up. Even so everything subsequently turned out to be legal.

Why was this jump ball re-jumped?

Regarding high school games, no more jump balls, that why God inspired somebody to invent the alternating possession arrow. No more peach baskets. No more chicken wire around the perimeter of the court. No more two hand set shots. No more jump balls.

Seriously, why was this jump ball re-jumped?

JRutledge Mon Apr 05, 2021 06:45pm

It appears the Arizona jumper touched the ball. Why was this even rejumped?

Peace

It’s rare to see a toss that’s too high – most tosses are too low. The U1 probably got surprised.

IMO I do not think that is too high. That is where I would want it to be for these players. They are not stealing the tip and with girls or women, if you get it about 10 feet high most players are not getting to it. It was about as good of a toss I have seen in that situation from my point of view. The U1 just guessed.

Peace

The only possible reason to call it back would be a jump ball violation by White (encroaching on Red's half of the center circle). However, even if that was the call, the proper continuation would have been awarding possession to Red at the division line opposite the table. It pains me to say that the crew screwed up the administration of this jump ball for no good reason.

I do not think it is either, but it is higher than most tosses I see which is why I think the U1 was caught off guard.

Good Reason ...

Agree. This didn't happen: If the ball contacts the floor without being touched by at least one of the jumpers, the official must toss it again.
