IAABO International only gives two choices: traveling violation, or no traveling violation.

Here's my comment: Traveling violation. Red ballhandler catches the ball while moving with both feet off the floor and lands on his right foot first establishing his right foot as his pivot foot. He then starts a dribble by releasing the ball after his right pivot foot is lifted.

Early comments from IAABO members seem to be leaning toward a traveling violation by a wide margin.

Thoughts?

IAABO International Play Commentary: Correct Answer: This is a traveling violation.

When a player catches the ball while moving with both feet off the court and lands on one foot, followed by the other, the first foot to touch is the pivot. (4-44-2a.2) The pivot foot may not be lifted before the ball is released to start a dribble. (4-44-3c)

In this play, the red player moves toward the lane when he catches the ball on the run and establishes the right foot as the pivot foot when the left foot touches in a step. He then lifts the pivot foot off the floor before releasing the ball to start a dribble. This is a traveling violation and should have been ruled.

This play may challenge a 3-person crew, as the player is moving away from the Trail official when the violation occurs. If the Trail was unsure the ball was released before the pivot foot is lifted, he did the correct thing by not ruling a violation.

The Center may have observed an off-ball match-up in the lane area and may not have seen the whole play. He also may have had his view obstructed by players directly in front of him. If the Center had position adjusted a step toward the division line, he might have had a better view and been able to rule on this violation.
