MAC Men's and Women's Basketball
The Mid-American Conference dropped a bomb shell yesterday afternoon. Starting with the 2020-21 school year the MAC will not have a post-season championship tournaments in baseball, softball, men's and women's soccer and tennis, women's lacrosse, and field hockey. The post-season tournaments in these sports will not resume any sooner that the 2024-25 school year. The decision was made due to the financial situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The MAC also announced that changes will be made in the men's and women's basketball and women's volleyball post-season championship tournaments. MTD, Sr. |
1. Excellent! This is a great decision even without any financial issues caused by the coronavirus shutdown. Conference tournaments are a lame money grab, which cheapen the value of the regular season. The regular season champion should earn the NCAA tournament berth. That is a more realistic evaluation of the strength of a team than a single weekend tournament consisting of only a handful of games.
2. This is hardly a bombshell. It’s not as if they announced that the sport would be dropped (see Cincinnati men’s soccer) or no season would be played next school year. The latter is precisely what the Cal State University system announced was in serious jeopardy yesterday. All of the schools within its system are going to continue with online learning in the Fall semester of the 20-21 school year, meaning that there will not be students on campus at Fresno State, San Jose State, and San Diego State. Thus, the Mountain West Conference has announced that these three member schools might not field teams for Fall or Winter sports (football, soccer, basketball, etc.) during the 20-21 school year. Now that’s a bombshell. |

Money grabs in those sports? Not sure I agree with that considering that many times this is part of the process to decide if someone makes the NCAA Tournament near the end of the season in those sports. So I do not see this as a money grab as this could highlight a team that would not normally make it by simply their resume. I think they are good end of the year experiences for the players and the schools. It is sad this had to happen, but probably necessary. But this idea that they have no value is kind of silly.

Some cuts due to finances announced by the MWC: baseball, women’s soccer, and tennis tourneys all scrapped for 20-21, all regular-season baseball series for the conf will be played over two days instead of three with one day involving a DH, all officiating fees are frozen.
