Tip pass
 
Player A1 is six feet from the basket and shoots an air ball. A1 runs for the rebound and , while the ball is still in the air, ‘taps’ the ball to A2 . The referee allows the play to continue. Is this a legal play?

Is it ever illegal to rebound/be the first to touch one’s own try for goal?

The two cases are ever-so slightly different. I think the OP wanted to see if that made a difference in the ruling.

So I will add for hint.... goes to definitions. What happens on a shot? (You have to determine if it is a legitimate shot) and NBA rules differ here

It is only illegal under NBA rules. In all other rule sets, it is fair game.
