What fouls count toward team foul count

You are not alone; this is surprisingly confusing to so many officials. A couple of years ago I was spectating a varsity boys game right behind the table. Game started with FTs for an admin T. Table didn’t put the team foul on the board and the game continued. Thinking it was a table oversight and trying to help the crew, I whispered to the scorer during a dead ball and they put the team foul on the board.

A minute later some knucklehead in the crew saw it on the board and took it off, insisting the admin tech did not count as a team foul. Both of his partners agreed with him.

I couldn’t believe it. Varsity crew. Ended up costing the offended team a bonus free throw later on, too. Luckily it was not a close game.

Agree.

Administrative technical fouls can be confusing for some.

I attended a refresher exam meeting a few weeks ago and we were told that a team could not be charged with more than one administrative technical foul.

While this may be true in practice (how many of us have actually charged an administrative technical foul for "failing to supply the scorer with the name and number of each team member who may participate and designate the five starting players at least ten minutes before the scheduled starting time", and yet if one officiates long enough one will eventually have to deal with an actual scorebook problem in a game), it's not true "by rule" on a written exam.

Did the rule about a player T counting toward the team foul change recently? In the current NFHS rule book, the box for "counts towards" is blank for a Player Technical Foul.

Not in the new book I have. Every technical outside of an Indirect counts towards the team fouls. Unless your talking about the Head Coach Assessed box, which of course is blank because a player T doesnt count against the HC's technical foul count.

Looks like it's a formatting error in the NFHS app version of the rule book.

Bad design.
