Fascinating
This is a great thread. I started early - I'm entering my 21st season of HS ball, 8th of NCAA-W, and I'm 38 years old.
I've had a great career - but now, with a 6-month old at home, I've cut way back on my schedule for this year...and know I'll probably be coaching one of his teams down the road (because former officials make great youth coaches :) We'll see what the future holds but everyone has to have their own priorities...and I know reffing isn't even close to the top of my list. |

When I can't beat the players to my spot at Lead, then it's time. I feel like I owe the game that. I once worked with a "veteran" official who refused to accept the fact that his time had come. He was being overrun in transition by the Trail as he was trying to get to Lead...in a girls varsity game. It was embarrassing. I don't want to be "that guy". |

Not to hijack the discussion, but I was talking with a fellow official who took an assigning job. He said the toughest thing he had to face was telling veterans that they were over the hill.

I'm starting my first year for the 25th time.
At this rate, I hope to make it to my third season. |
