Let me preface this by saying I haven't refereed in two years. I was at a Jr. High Boys game tonight, of course went to overtime, the 2 ref's on the court told the timer to put 2 minutes on the clock, they play 6 minute quarters. I was told I was wrong, but as I remember, unless something has changed, is it not half of a normal quarter for all non-varsity games? Thanks.

It is here in TX...4 minutes for high school, 3 minutes for Jr. Hi and below...which equates to half a normal period. NCAA is also comparable at 5 minutes for OT.

I think JH is pretty variable from place to place, and possibly even within localities. Several JH leagues around here play pretty fast and loose with different aspects of the game. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't have a policy, nor if the policy changed every year.

OK, then let me do this another way, forget Jr. High, what is the rule? My book is 3 years old, is it different, has something in the rule book changed? Thanks again.

Right -- that's an "unannounced" rules change for this year.

In prior years, the rule was 4 minutes for OT, 3 minutes in games of 6-minute quarters.

So, by rule, if you played 7-minute quarters, you'd still have a 4-minute OT under the prior rule. Now it will be 3:30.
