I'm amazed that baseball can be played in Tennessee in mid February. We'll be buried under snow until April, maybe May.

Baseball and softball both have similar issues in terms of playability, because baseball and softball fields are made of the same materials, dirt and grass/sod. More so for softball, because the entire infield is dirt.

This is the Civil Engineering in me speaking. The Infield is made of soil, a naturally occurring engineered material. Dirt is what gets under one's finger nails.

And now-a-days, many college softball fields and some baseball fields are made of artificial turf.

A triple-header on Friday! They must be short of umpires for college softball in that area.
