wanting to look as professional as possible and of course, wantin' to look "supa fly", which i guess go hand-in-hand. seeking professionalism, comfort and coolness (literally, mentally and figuratively). what do you all use? (similar to "what's in your bag" thread a while back, i need a refresher) :)

-All black shoes (nike? new balance? cons?)
-Black/White socks (dr. scholl's here. no sho? crew? others?)
-Pants/Slacks (sansabelt here. dress slacks? cotton/wool/poly?)
-Black Shorts (Nike mesh here. others?)
-Compress shorts (mcdavid? underarmour? others?)
-Flex belt (yes/no?)
-Undershirt (underarmor here. reg t-shirt? tank? others?)
-Referee shirt (poly? mesh? other?) (this one especially) :)
-Lanyard (smitty? choker? other?)
-Fox 40 (reg/mini? mouthguard?)
-Jacket (association here. sahara? coach's jacket? satin? other?)
-More suggestions?

I doubt that anybody on this forum cares what I wear, but since nobody else has replied, I'll give you my laundry list.

I wear the all black Converse Whistle sneaker. I don't love them, but they're the best I've come across. I tried the New Balance 608, but just didn't feel comfortable in it. I loved my old Avia's, but they don't make 'em anymore.

Sansabelt pants.

Either McDavid or micromesh V-neck striped shirt.

Black V-neck undershirt. I prefer the McDavid, but if they're all dirty, I just use a regular t-shirt.

Black compression shorts -- Bike. I don't wear shorts unless I just don't have my compression shorts for some reason (like when I was at camp this summer  ).

No flex belt.

Black crew length athletic socks. Just one pair, even tho I know some guys double up.

Smitty lanyard, unless both my college partners are wearing a noose lanyard.

Fox 40, I usually put a strip of black tape around the tip for padding.

No jacket for HS. For college I wear a jacket, but I have no idea what kind it is. I think it was the only choice available from the place where they told me I had to buy one.

Exciting stuff, I know. I hope it helped. :)

I'm assuming you are male, but in case I haven't read between the lines properly (and for females who read this board) I suggest the Nike sports bra that has the word "encapsulated" on the tag. I can't remember the exact label. It's the only bra worth using, in my opinion.

oh...just a side note, it's EXPENSIVE!! but worth it.

Shoes-Changing this year from Converse Whistle shined with Griffin to NB shined with Leather Luster.

Socks-Black crew socks with an embroidered white basketball surrounding a white Nike Swoosh (1 pr./game.)

Pants-Changing from Haggar polyester Action Slacks (flats) to Sansabelt (1 pr. pleats & 1 pr. flats).

Black shorts-2 pr. mesh made by Champion, 1 pair polyester (made by Athletic Works.)

Compression shorts-nope, can't stand 'em!

Flex belt-nope, don't need it.

Undershirt-black cotton v-neck bought from my association.

Ref Shirt-Bristol, polyester. (considering a different brand by not sure what to try.)

Lanyard-Smitty all the way!

Whistle-Fox40, regular.

Jacket-satin for high school, sahara for college.

Ref bag-Black Eddie Bauer duffle.

Extras-Bag of Lifesaver Mints. I put 2 in my mouth before I go onto the floor. I hate it when my partners blow bad breath all over the coaches!!

NOT one ounce of cotton in my uniform. Cotton is about the worst performance fabric you can get. I soaks up and retains water/dries very slowly, doesn't breath (hot to wear), wrinkles easily, color fades easily.

-All black shoes (nike? new balance? cons?)
I'm currently wearing New Balance 608 (or is it 609) from Honig's because they fit my wide feet. But I'm VERY disappointed because the "finish" has peeled off on a couple of the little panels near the front and left the white stuff underneath showing. Will think twice before going with NB again. Have Dr. Scholl's padded inserts that make a big difference.
-Black/White socks (dr. scholl's here. no sho? crew? others?)
Black crew length socks, unless I'm in shorts then I wear black ankle length socks.
-Pants/Slacks (sansabelt here. dress slacks? cotton/wool/poly?)
Last year it was Eddie Bauer. In the off season I wear a pair of Majestic stretchy-fabric pants. Need to get a nice pair or two for the HS season this year.
-Black Shorts (Nike mesh here. others?)
Nike
-Compress shorts (mcdavid? underarmour? others?)
I have McDavid and Under Armor, and prefer the McDavid.
-Flex belt (yes/no?)
No, tuck your shirt into your compression shorts and you're good to go.
-Undershirt (underarmor here. reg t-shirt? tank? others?)
Looking at the Under Armor, but don't wear anything currently.
-Referee shirt (poly? mesh? other?) (this one especially) :)
I HATE poly shirts. They're scratchy and nasty feeling. I wear poly/cotton.
-Lanyard (smitty? choker? other?)
Smitty
-Fox 40 (reg/mini? mouthguard?)
Fox 40 classic
-Jacket (association here. sahara? coach's jacket? satin? other?)
Will get a HS association jacket this year.

My bag looks like this:

Shoes -- New Balance 609 -- shined with "Shape-Up"

Socks -- two pair, first is a pair of "support" socks to give me a little extra help with some chronic shin splints (and so my wife can laugh at me and call me an old man), second pair, basic black crew athletic sock. Saw some at Sports Authority made by UnderArmor thought I might give them a try -- a bit expensive though.

Pants -- Sansablets with pleats (here's a hint to save some $$, if you wear shorts under your pants you won't have to wash them as often, the less you wash them the more seasons you can get out of the same pair)

Shorts -- Black athletic shorts underneath (glad they were there the night I ripped my pants from stem to stern right before the game started -- which also explains why I now carry two pair, and a sewing kit).

Uniform shirt -- MicroMesh V-neck

Undershirt -- McDavid Interawear -- sleeveless v-neck.

Whistle/Lanyard -- Fox 40 -- no mouth guard here. Usually wear a noose lanyard -- bought one of the newer breakaway lanyards this week -- just to give it a try.

Other -- tape for my bad ankle, a couple of knee braces, and some Ben-Gay for those darn shin-splints (and to annoy my partners in the locker room)

JRutledge Wed Oct 15, 2003 12:18am

1. 2 Pair of shoes--One New Balance 608 and one Patent Leather Converse All-Star.

2. 2 or 3 pair of socks--Gerry Davis socks. I love these things.

3. 2 pair of McDavid Ankle length compression pants--Keeps legs warm and never had a leg injury.

4. 2 Black shorts.

5. 2 or 3 pair of Sansabelt Pants--At least one pleated pair and one western front/flat pair. Want to match partner if I can.

6. 2 or 3 V-neck shirts.

7. 3 or 4 Black T-shirts.

8. 2 IHSA Insignia Jackets--Or a CCA Jacket depending one what kind of game I am doing.

9. I have a little bag with several whistles (Fox 40) and several lanyards (Noose and Smitty style). I have a couple of Fox 40 whistles that are still in the package with Association insignias on them.

10. The last is just a bunch of misc. stuff. I have body soap, deoderant, mouthwash, shower shoes, towel, wet bag, cologne, lock and anything else to make getting me ready for after the game.

Peace

ChuckElias reminds me my favourite Avia 800, I've been wearing at least 3 pairs of very good shoes since Avia gone, but none is comfortable to me.
BTW, a lot of GUM is for sure in my bag.

Mregor Wed Oct 15, 2003 08:37am

Don't use the Fox mini. Different pitch. Easily stands out. Get the classic. I like the CMG.

They're the same to me.

The fox40 website seems to read that they are the same:

"same pea-less design and ultra shrill tone of the Classic."

Perhaps the people that you are comparing are blowing them differently. I know I hear differences from time to time but it is the person, not the whistle since they have the same kind.

I hear a definite difference, but I wouldn't call it pitch, I'd call it volume. The mini is much better for MS games with five total fans. In the cross-town rival play-off game with the SRO crowd, mini WON"T do.

That reminds me! I have a bottle of lotion to take care of this problem. I put lotion on my legs and have no problem with static.

The best I can find on the web...from several indirect sources...is that both produce a maximum of 115 dB.

Again, I bet is more in how they are blown than any real difference.

Are you camparing what it sounds like when you blow it or when someone else? If it is yourself, there may be some other factors.

A good test would be to have someone across the gym blow one (a) then the other (b) and then randomly blow one again (a or b). If you can tell which it is on a regular basis, the maybe their is a difference. Also, change the person blowing it.

The "test" where I see a consistent difference is the reaction of the player who is standing next to me waiting to receive the ball for a throw in. Mini -- takes the ball and looks for an open teammate. Classic -- puts hand on ear and makes a face.

(I'm ignoring all that stuff about moisturizing and kissing and whatever else... studiously ignoring... shouting down...)

The Fox 40 mini does make a different sound than the classic. I had one and got rid of it. You can use the classic in any game so why not simplify things by just using a classic?
Shoes - I have found that Converse and New Balance do not last as long as other shoes. I wear a couple of different kinds of Nikes. I used to be in Las Vegas and had a shoe man that could work magic! I have to find a new one. Take care of your feet! Find a shoe that is right for you and buy two pairs if you want. If your feet are hurting from bad shoes you cannot be as effective on the court, period.
I have also found that compression shorts are good but I feel more comfortable wearing Underarmor compression pants. I wear Underarmor compression v-necks or Nike dri-fit shirts.
I have regular shirts, micromesh shirts and two grey shirts on the way. Whatever feels good to you. A trip to a good tailor and a couple of dollars will have your shirts fitting very good.
Pleats are the way to go and I would get some from a good source. You will wear them a lot and you will pay now or pay for more later.
Lanyards are also a personal preference. A noose with the bead type slider works for some but I don't wear it. The smitty is really annoying to me. I wear the noose with the disc type slider (I don't know what else to call it).
I don't know if flex belts work or not and buy some socks that are comfortable to you.

All black shoes (nike? new balance? cons?)
New Balance 609 i think? maybe its the 508. Its not thier newest black shoe. I didnt like that one.

-Black/White socks
Black NBA socks. Crew length. Carry a nice comfry pair of socks I got a K&G mens store for summer.

-Pants/Slacks
Sansbelt Poly.
I've got a regular pair of black slacks that I keep in my bag for backup or those relaly long days. I'll start the day off with those. Espcially for tournys.

-Black Shorts (Nike mesh here. others?)
No shorts. just my black FTL boxer briefs

-Compress shorts (mcdavid? underarmour? others?)

None. I personally cant stand em. Save ya some money too

-Flex belt (yes/no?)

Yes! I love it... keeps your shirt in and close to your body and if u postion just under where ur pants waist line on your pants it'll keep those up too.

-Undershirt
Underarmor t-shirt.

-Referee shirt
Cliff Kleens
2 mesh 1 poly. Some gyms in the winter actually stay pretty cool. I know of the rec leagues I did this winter had a cool gym. so that poly shirt gave me a lil extra comfrot.

-Lanyard (smitty? choker? other?)
3 loops 3 smittys

-Fox 40 (reg/mini? mouthguard?)
6 classics 1 mini no mouthgaruds. I personally do not care for the mouthgaurd. It is all personal prefrence. I havnt used my mini since I called an 7 year old girls game 1 1/2 ago.

-Jacket
Black Saraha similar to CCA with my association logo on it. Contact local dealers they may have association specific or can tell you what jacket you need. Some dont even require jacket but its still nice for sub varsiety for post game hwne u you want to get out of their.

-More suggestions?

Dont skimp on your shoes or anything for that matter. Price = Qualities. You get what you pay for. Just remeber that. Get the shoes that fit you best becasue that is what is better for your ankles and your knees which is what you need if you want to do this for a while. you will pay your uniform off by the end of the season. Guarnteed. Carry a pack of gum in your bag, some 1's dont hurt for water or conscessions, I do carry lotion for my legs and also to freshen up a little bit after the game .... Just a daily moisturizer. Alot of times i'm going from a game to dinner with the family or friends or someplace else so i wanna feel kinna fresh.

Do you think it more professional to wear the shoes that are preshined (converse, etc...) I found a nice pair online but I would like some feedback before purchasing. I have all the shining tools just want to make sure they are not too tacky. Here is what they look like...

I have not bought a black pair shoes in years. I buy a good running shoe and then dye them black. I don't care the name. I have Asics and Nike. The Asics were white, gray, gold, green. Now they are black. My Nike's were white, glod. Now they are black.
