options?
Shooting foul.....but before fouled player goes to the line, coach calls player over to bench area to talk to him. This seems to happen every time there's a shooting foul. Coach continues to talk to player. Finally, I step into coaches area and tell him "let's go, we need the shooter at the line". He immediately starts a rant about how he can talk to his player if he wants to. I tell him, "let's go, if you want to talk to your shooter, call a time out".
If this crap continues, what are my options next time? Thanks in advance |
Edit: I was way off. Turning in my striped shirt. It's in your rulebook and I will find the citation someday.

4-48 would probably be what I was looking for. 10-2-1b could be applicable?

10-4-5c:
A play shall not...delay the game by acts such as: The free thrower fails to be in the free-throw semicircle when the official is ready to administer the free throw unless the resumption-of play procedure is in effect following a time-out or intermission. 10.4.5 addresses your question directly: The ruling official has reported the foul and has given directions to players along the lane. The official is ready to put the ball at free thrower A1’s disposal, but A1 is at the sideline talking to the coach. RULING: A technical foul for delay is charged to A1. No warning is authorized in this situation. (10-4-5c) |
Perfect. That’s what I had, but then when I looked in the digital rulebook on the NFHS app, that wasn’t the same one. I must’ve messed something up.

"coach I need your shooter and this delay is a tech." When he starts his rant, if his player isn't on his way to the FT line, I T. If he is, I would say what you said about calling a TO if you want to chat with the shooter. But this scenario wouldn't have gone past the first time this happened. |
Won't Happen Again ...
The coach has little to do with this situation.
The problem is with the shooter. Everybody else lined up, one oral warning to the shooter (loud enough for the coach to hear) to get to the line (if I'm in a good mood). Everybody else lined up, and no movement by shooter toward the line, with no timeout involved, technical foul. Timeout involved, everybody else lined up, and no movement by shooter toward the line, place the ball on the line, and go from there (another timeout, or a violation). Won't happen again. I promise. |
Let me ask a stupid question related to Billy's post. On a FT if the shooter is delaying and you place the ball, am I mistaken in saying that the free thrower cannot cross in to get the ball? So it's basically automatically a violation if you go ROP on a free throw because it will either be a 10 second violation while the shooter stands outside the semi circle, or a violation for entering the semi-circle?
