Season Starts Monday!!

My season officially begins Monday evening. Was supposed to not be until Saturday but a couple different assignors filled this week up for me.

You know it's basketball season when I go clean shaven!

Best of luck and health to all this season, especially those of us in Illinois getting underway this week!

Football Rules ...

Here in Connecticut, the only fall sport that's already completed is cross country.

Most other fall sports are in the quarterfinal or semifinal rounds of the state tournament.

Regular season football ends on Thanksgiving with the state tournament to follow.

Practice can't start for public/parochial girls basketball until November 26, for public/parochial boys basketball on November 29.

Regular season public/parochial girls games can't start until December 10, public/parochial boys games can't start until December 13.

My first public/parochial school scrimmage is Friday November 30. My first public/parochial game is Monday December 10.

Prep school games begin the third week of November.

For the record, football is still going on in Illinois. This weekend will be the Semifinals so only a handful of teams are even still playing and only involves Boys teams honestly. Practice for each starts about 3 weeks before their first eligible games.

Girls basketball starts this week and Boys starts the week of Thanksgiving. This is a basketball state and I will work a tournament title game on the Saturday after Thanksgiving that the host school will likely be competing in that Championship game or has been in that Championship game the last few years. This is a state that loves football, but basketball is life.

Peace

Illinois is a big state. Surely you must have a few girls playing football. We have a few every year here in Connecticut. Usually kickers, or skilled positions, but my hometown high school team (a large school state powerhouse) had a lineman (linewoman) a few years ago. Played junior varsity, but had a few snaps on the varsity team.

It is not unusual for football players not to play the first week of basketball (mostly boys) if the football team played deep in the playoffs. Many players that would play both if they are done early int he playoffs (first round is the last week of October), then they are usually more than ready to start the basketball season. Again there are only 32 teams statewide that are at all playing football at this time of year. That is a very small percentage of the overall schools that are playing basketball when the season starts (nearly 700 schools). This is not much of an issue.

Yes we have girls that play football, but again such a rare thing this hardly influences a girls team on any level.

Peace

My hometown high school football team made it to the State championship a few years ago, in a tournament during which games were postponed a few times due to snow, and didn't have three basketball starters until the first game, they missed almost all the practices and scrimmages, and got off to a slow start that they never recovered from. Whole new basketball coaching staff that year, I felt sorry for them. Parents weren't as forgiving as me.
