Just found out at my local meeting last night that our association will continue to Bird Dog this season. Any other associations in the same boat?

Only doing it for "clarification" in IN.

Texas hasn't bird dogged in years. In fact, I think it was the rep from Texas who introduced the change. I think it is good. College officials don't have to worry about two separate mechanics when they do HS games.

You probably have some to worry about, just not that one.

Still birddoging.

I am just under a week from going to a Rules Meeting so I will find out. But our local associations have little to no say over what we do on the court. Now the state might have a say, but I see no reason why they would go against the NF on this one. It only makes sense.

Birddoging can still be used, it is only if you need to clarify who that call might be on. So I am still going to do it, not as often.

Peace

OOur meeting should be in the next week or so--not sure what we will be doing in NH until then--
might be a habit thats hard to break though!

is this an option or a requirement?

like someone mentioned above, no one in Texas does the bird dog anymore. except some of the newbies who have just started out.

JRutledge Thu Oct 09, 2003 08:09pm

Optional.

The NF changed the mechanic to what the NCAA Men do. Only used for "clarification." So yes, it is optional if the official chooses to use it. If the foul is obvious to everyone, then no need to bird dog.

Peace

Of course the stop clock signal would be one. We still do that one at the HS level here. We do of course bird dog if there is a question as to who the foul was on. But 95% of the calls go without a bird dog.

I was originally asking if this was an option or a requirement within the chapter.

Nonetheless, thanks for the clarification. :)

Well we have associations, not chapters. Our association helps train us, but they do not have the power to dictate what we do all the time on the court. I might not even work with guys in my association that much at all during a season, depending on what conference I am working in.

Our association dictates what mechanics will be used during regular season. Bird Dogging on every foul will not be an option.
