2018 NFHS basketball survey
Anyone looked through this yet?
After the did you like the changes last year and what have you seen this year, the rules proposals seem to be: (combined a few of these as they were redundant) 1 No free throws for common fouls prior to the 6th team foul of each quarter 2 Technical foul for slapping backboard even during a try 3 Quarters to halves 4 3-foot arc(aka restricted area) 5 Home uniforms to dark colors, visitors to white 6 Allow a coach to request a time-out near the end of the game to allow for bench personnel to enter the game – and only for that purpose. 7 Shot clock by state adoption 8 Shot Clock nationally 9. More accessory color allowances 10 Allow tipped-ball signal for help on OOB calls 11 Single signal for TC and PC fouls 12 Beginning with 6th team foul each quarter, awarding 2 FT's for subsequent fouls 13. Reset team fouls to 0 each quarter if 1-1 is eleminated 14 Permitting headbands with knots or tails and increasing headband width 15 Coaches can only call TO's during deadball periods 16. Eleminating start of game/OT with jump ball 17 Allow coaches to request 30 second TO if only 60 second TO's remain available 18 Direct T to coach for players entering game with illegal equipment 19 Screener's must be not be out of bounds 20 Dunking during pregame is a conduct warning to head coach 21 Disallowing timeout countdowns showing on game clock instead of the game time 22 10 second backcourt count resumes if defense causes the ball to go out of bounds, resets for anything else 23 Warmup gear must be removed 3:00 before game time |

1 No free throws for common fouls prior to the 6th team foul of each quarter--Sure...If it allows teams to adjust and we shoot fewer FT's
2 Technical foul for slapping backboard even during a try--No 3 Quarters to halves--No preference 4 3-foot arc(aka restricted area)--No 5 Home uniforms to dark colors, visitors to white--Leave that to NFL/NHL 6 Allow a coach to request a time-out near the end of the game to allow for bench personnel to enter the game – and only for that purpose.--They do that anyway 7 Shot clock by state adoption--No 8 Shot Clock nationally--Yes 9. More accessory color allowances--No 10 Allow tipped-ball signal for help on OOB calls--Some do this anyway already 11 Single signal for TC and PC fouls--Yes 12 Beginning with 6th team foul each quarter, awarding 2 FT's for subsequent fouls--Yes 13. Reset team fouls to 0 each quarter if 1-1 is eleminated--Yes 14 Permitting headbands with knots or tails and increasing headband width--Yes 15 Coaches can only call TO's during deadball periods--Yes 16. Eleminating start of game/OT with jump ball--Coin toss in the captain's meeting? Nope...let's toss it up. 17 Allow coaches to request 30 second TO if only 60 second TO's remain available--No 18 Direct T to coach for players entering game with illegal equipment--Yes 19 Screener's must be not be out of bounds--Yes 20 Dunking during pregame is a conduct warning to head coach--Yes 21 Disallowing timeout countdowns showing on game clock instead of the game time--YES!!! 22 10 second backcourt count resumes if defense causes the ball to go out of bounds, resets for anything else--No 23 Warmup gear must be removed 3:00 before game time--No |

21. Eliminating the jump ball at the beginning of the game. The visiting team would get first possession and the arrow would be set after legal inbounds. I would love to hear those who want to keep the jump ball recite, by memory, no peeking at the rulebook, all the jump ball restrictions for jumpers, nonjumpers on the circle, and nonjumpers off the circle, before the toss, during the toss, and after the toss. Note: This challenge does not apply to Mark T. DeNucci, Sr. I'm sure that the could recite all the jump ball restrictions, verbatim, all in one breath, blindfolded, with one hand tied behind his back, with no problem. I've heard, many times, otherwise great officials, tell all ten players, "Don't move", right before the toss. And I'm sure that that's just the tip of the jump ball restriction myth iceberg. Some, otherwise competent officials, just toss it up and hope that none of the players do anything obviously weird like a jumper illegally catching the ball, or one of the jumpers tapping the ball on the way up, or one of the jumpers tapping the ball more more than twice. Those are easy violations to catch. The subtleties of the many other jump ball restrictions are lost for some, otherwise good, officials.

One of our local clinicians always tells us "All you're doing with the jump ball is setting the possession arrow". I tend to agree with that...I also think that learning the rules of the jump ball administration is not difficult, as it's just like any other rule.
I think taking the jump ball out of the game takes away some of the excitement at the beginning of the game, like the opening face off in hockey or the kickoff in football. For most of the proposed rules changes, I can see the reasoning behind it. Not this one though... |

Peach Baskets ???
Quote:
Sure, back when there were possibly up to a dozen jump balls in each game (to start each quarter, and for all held ball situations) at three different circles, involving many different players, it was worth knowing all the intricate jump ball rules. Then, inspired by God, someone came along and invented the possession arrow. We've gone from dozens of jump balls per game, to one. Let's put the horse out of its misery. The jump ball should join the peach baskets, and laced basketballs, in basketball heaven.
