Interesting Story out of Minnesota

Here is an interesting story out of Minnesota regarding officiating. A three whistle crew for the 1st time(possibly) made up of 3 female officials did a girls game in Central Minnesota last week. The youngest of the three is 19 and has been doing games since she was 13 at the youth level.

I didn't read the article, but what is interesting is that it took this long.

Our board is having their 1st all female crew this Thursday night.

It has been hard to get female officials to begin with, then hard to keep them long enough to get to the varsity level. We have 4 ladies on our board now. We have 46 active officials ( usually about 50 but we are down this year)

Here's a link to the short video that tells the story.

Seems odd to me it took so long, we have 3 female crews all the time here, going back at least 6-7 years. I believe (not certain would have to verify) that we have had a 3 female crew on a state championship game.

I think we had that here last year for the first time.

I saw all female crews here in Virginia all the way back in 2001-2002, my first year in officiating.

How many have done boys varsity?

I hired an all-female crew for that this season. I hired 3 male officials to work the girls varsity game that followed.

I use female officials in boys games all the time.

Two years ago a female official was the R on the top classification boys state basketball championship. We have all female crews on mens games to a decent degree, although a lot of them work women's college and I believe prefer to work women's games.

Not many. We only had our 1st female official in the Boys State Tourney 2 years ago. She has worked the last 2 boys tournaments after being a fixture for years in the girls tourney. She did a 2A semifinal last year in the Minnesota Boys Tourney and 2 years ago did a 3A quarterfinal. No officials are listed in the 3A box score but I confirmed it using another source.

Waseca vs Fergus Falls (3/9/16 at Williams Arena (Minneapolis, Minn.))

Minnehaha Academy vs Annandale (3/24/17 at Target Center)

You have to get three females that:
A. are equipped/trained/qualified
B. want to work at a high school level
C. haven’t already been gobbled up by college assigners also “needing” females.

Not as easy as one might assume!
