Common Foul-->Flagrant Foul

I'm almost positive we handled this correctly tonight, looking for rule/case citation to be sure. Any direction is appreciated.

Team A has the ball for an end line throw in in their back court. As A1 is trying to get open, he's held by B1. After the whistle, as A1 escapes the grasp of B1, he comes up with a punch toward B1. Luckily nothing escalated from there. Nobody came off the bench, B1 didn't retaliate in kind.

My partner and I conferred to make sure we saw the same thing. We agreed A1 threw a punch toward B1. We went to report to the table and explain to the coaches.

We had the sub for A1 shoot the common foul FT's (A was in double bonus). We allowed anyone on Team B to shoot the FT's for the flagrant foul. Team B took the ball out of bounds at the division line opposite to resume play.

Was that the correct way to handle that? Rules/case citation please.

You were correct. You had a false double foul with the first foul being common and the second was a flagrant technical. Shoot the free throws in order of occurrence.

NFHS 8-2:

The free throw(s) awarded because of a personal foul shall be attempted by the offended player. If such player must withdraw because of an injury or disqualification, his/her substitute shall attempt the throw(s) unless no substitute is available, in which case any teammate may attempt the throw(s) as selected by the team captain or head coach.

And NFHS 8-3:

The free throws awarded because of a technical foul may be attempted by any player of the offended team, including an eligible substitute or designated starter. The coach or captain shall designate the free thrower(s).
