Backcourt or Not?

A1 ,in frontcourt, passes ball. Passed ball lands on division line, spins back and bounces in frontcourt, where A2, picks up ball....

  1. Team control? Yes
  2. Ball in frontcourt? Yes.
  3. Team A last to touch before it returned to the backcourt? Yes
  4. Team A first to touch after it returned to the backcourt? Yes

All Yes? Violation, otherwise no violation.

This didn't happen in the opening post, and I should say A2 is in the frontcourt

It didn’t?

The ball returned to the backcourt when it touched the division line. The first player to touch it after this happened was A2. It doesn’t matter whether that touch occurs in the frontcourt or backcourt.

So, the ball hit the division line, than bounced in the frontcourt....Once the ball bounces in the frountcourt, isn't it in the frontcourt?

It doesn't matter whether it returns to the frontcourt or not. The key phrase is "after it returns to the backcourt."

Yes it is. And it’s still illegal for Team A to be the first to touch it.

Got it...Makes sense

Four Elements ...

The four elements for having a backcourt violation are: there must be team control (and initial player control
when coming from a throw-in); the ball must have achieved frontcourt status; the team in team control must
be the last to touch the ball before it goes into the backcourt; that same team must be the first to touch after
the ball has been in the backcourt.
