Alabama style 3-man!

Alabama finishes game with 3 players after entire bench ejected after scuffle

I didn’t watch it, but kind of comical to read about. From a rules standpoint, there is one part of the article I zeroed in on:

“Soon after Alabama had taken four consecutive free throws due to the string of Minnesota techs, Dupree McBrayer and Dazon Ingram got tangled up underneath, prompting a shoving match between both teams. Players on Alabama's bench ran onto the floor as officials tried to deal with the chaos.

“Once the smoke cleared, officials decided to remove the entire Alabama bench, and those players proceeded to walk to the locker room at Barclays Center. But officials weren't clear on whether any technical fouls had been assessed, and the Gophers did not take any free throws.”

Assuming McBrayer, Ingram, and any other pushers and shovers incurred no penalties at this point, what’s left are solely Alabama players who left the bench when a fight might have broken out. Under NFHS rules (10 Pen 8-b-1), this would have resulted in two FTs and the ball to Minnesota (not to mention one indirect T to the HC). Is the NCAAM rule not similar? Why no TF FTs for Minnesota?

Did you actually read the article? It contains two paragraphs which are written responses from the officials to the pool reporters. They directly address your questions.

What's really sad is that Alabama actually outscored Minnesota 30-22 playing 3v5. Had it down to a three point game before only losing by 5. I didn't actually see the game, but I can't imagine Minnesota feels too good about its performance.

The NCAAM (and NCAAW) rule books are available for free on line. THat, like the fight rule, is different from FED.

I read the pool report statements, but without a reference, I wasn’t sure they were correct which is why I asked for a second opinion. It was late and I chose not to go searching through the NCAA book. I was more interested in the inevitable rules comparison discussion that would follow. Bob pointed out that there is, in fact, a difference here. Thanks, Bob.

Lots of HS officials (many of them new) lurk here and read our discussions. I didn’t want to leave them with the impression that players leaving the bench in unequal numbers results in no FTs.

In NCAA-M there is no foul/FT penalty associated with leaving the bench and not participating in a fight. You are simply ejected and not subject to suspension, and there’s no foul assessed to the offender(s) or the head coach.

Unlike FED where every individual that comes off gets a flagrant T regardless of whether they participate or not.
