New rule 3-4-4b question

Anybody seen the NFHS new rules presentation? In discussing 3-4-4b, it states that the shoulder area is allowed to hold identifying names or conference/team logos.

And then one of the ILLEGAL examples they show is a player's initials that are in the shoulder area. Why is this illegal? Because it's not a patch? A memorial patch is still legal, right?

So I can't figure out why having initials on a patch is legal, but having the initials on the jersey in the same location is not legal.

Is it because the initials in the illegal example are the player's OWN initials? Why should that matter? It's identifying and it's in the legal area.

Any thoughts/ideas?

It's because initials < > name (first or last), and it's not a "memorial"

But, I agree -- the new wording is not very clear (for example, the new wording never indicates it's for the shoulder area)

What if I wanted to have "Scrapper" there. It's certainly identifying.

How about if another of our esteemed members wanted to have "DJ" there? Those are his initials, but it's how he identifies himself.

A players initials or a player's nickname are not allowed (now, how would an official know?).. A school nickname is allowed.
