fed mechanic

What is the correct fed mechanic for 'end of q/game' signal?

JRutledge Fri Oct 27, 2017 01:20pm

Be more specific if you can. Are you talking about when shot is attempted or when nothing happens?

Peace

Only applies to the opposite table official:

There is no signal in the chart specifically for "end of quarter." If no shot is attempted just hit the whistle and put your hand up. If a shot is attempted but is too late then immediately hit the whistle and wave it off. If a shot is attempted in time, wait until the try ends before giving any whistle/signal.

DO NOT give the "wave off" signal unless there is a shot attempt that is not in time. I've worked with officials who give this signal after a last-second shot goes in, intending to signal "end of quarter" even though the bucket counts. Obviously this is bad for more than one reason.

No Whistle, No Hand ...

Why the hand? It's the signal to stop the clock and the clock has already stopped. Why the whistle?

Here in all IAABO Connecticut, no whistle, no hand; in fact, rookie officials are instructed by observers not to sound their whistle when a period simply ends with no complications.

What does the NFHS Mechanics Manual say?

Correct. The horn (or light if present) ends the quarter unless a try is in flight.

When a try is in flight at the expiration of time, the quarter ends when the ball becomes dead and an official should sound the whistle to indicate that moment.

TBH, the way I do it is just the way I’ve always done it and the way most officials I observe do it. Not saying it’s mechanically in/correct, but no one has ever asked me to change.

If nothing is happening, I will just wave give a wave if I am the "last second shot" official. Always the way I have done it at all levels and no one has ever cared either way.

Peace

Again with the credo that no shot was attempted at the last second, when the horn sounds to end game or quarter I do nothing/no signaling. I just either prep for the next quarter or leave the confines of the court--however being sure to walk out with my partner (I make a practice to never leave the confines alone--just opens up the possibility for way too many bad news interactions with fans, coaches, players, etc...).

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

I always have a whistle. It's required in NCAAW, and in HS here -- but I don't know if that's specifically an IHSA adoption or not.

We are always told to have a whistle here as well whether there is a shot attempt or not.
