As an official I was taught long ago not to even attempt to throw a ball, jump to dislodge it, or use a broom handle, just for this reason. Have a player, coach, game management, ANYONE else do it but you!

Thirty years ago. Major rivalry game. Net is discovered to be caught on the rim at the beginning of a timeout. One of the shortest officials on my local board, who had to deal with the wrath of the fans up until that point, runs across the court from the division line and jumps to pull down the net, missing it by about eighteen inches. Fans all had a chuckle, but gave him an easier time for the rest of the game. His self deprecating humor had won over the fans.
