Gene Steratore Comments

Gene Steratore was the guest speaker at our Association's End-of- Season Banquet last night. Here were a few of my take-aways:

Officials – “You never win or lose.”
Why do you officiate? “The hook is the challenge. You do it for the game”
“Your reaction time should be identical to the athlete.”
Why do you ref so much? “You push yourself because you need to.”
Always carry yourself with class, “Everyone is a reporter.”
He’s writing a book entitled, “Alone in front of a million people.”
“You have to be your biggest critic.”
“We are the perfect people to hang the game on.”
“Know the rules. Play calling is easy. You have to manage the game. That’s hard.”
“Show your ego on the court only for self-preservation.”

He said sometimes, young officials can learn more in the CAR on the way to the game, than on the court.

Have the players and coaches learn more by seeing you arrive in this car before they go into the gym.

I also thought his point about the court being the "coach's office" was good. He used the analogy of how you might react to someone who came into you office and started moving objects around. That's not unlike what happens in a game. He said that especially at the college level, the court is the coach's office and they have full control of everything as they preparing for days leading up to a game where their performance will be evaluated.

It was an interesting perspective and I believe this was tied into the "ego" comment.

No, he just mentioned it in passing. He wasn't there to plug it IMO.

One reason why I do it? It's because it's hard to do right.

I don't follow these guys that closely, but this is enough to make me a fanboy.

Interesting. Do you remember if he explained this with more detail?

I'm surprised that Steratore didn't mention the First Rule of Officiating.
