Cheer during opponents free throw

cheerleaders on sideline as their cheer inadvertently disconcerts opponents free throw, Is there such a thing?

Only if the cheerleader is sitting on the bench , listed in the score book, or uses an artificial noisemaker.

Not so sure it's totally inadvertent. I think plenty of cheer squads begin their chants during an opponent's free throws, and a couple of cheer squads who don't understand the game will even do it during their own team's free throws!

The use of artificial noisemakers shall be prohibited.

Coaches are not allowed to use megaphones.

A team shall not use a megaphone or any mechanical sounding device ... at courtside for coaching purposes.

Is a megaphone an "artificial noisemaker"?

Are cheerleaders allowed to use megaphones?

Are fans allowed to use megaphones?

A few centuries ago, when I was in high school, we (the spectators) used to have a chant we used against the other team and our cheerleaders joined in. It occurred when they were shooting a FT. It was "SEE THAT BASKET - SEE THAT BALL - C'MON STUPID - HIT THE WALL! Our cheerleaders never got chastised for yelling that with us.

SITUATION 6: The school-sponsored cheerleaders wish to use megaphones as part of their cheerleading routines from the sidelines. RULING: The new rule prohibiting artificial noisemakers would not apply to the cheerleaders in this situation. The megaphones would only be legal for the cheerleader’s use, provided they were being used appropriately.

And after a perceived bad call against your team, did they also join in with you yelling, "A ROPE -- A TREE -- HANG THE REFEREE!!":D:D

As an official I realize how powerless you must feel that is "not in the spirit" of the rules to allow such an orchestrated attempt at disconcertion, yet there's nothing we can do about it. Most likely the faculty member who is the cheerleader coach prolly came up with that ruse. Last night I worked a game wherein I heard a fan shout out during the FT attempt: "how's your dog doing!". The FT shooter did pause for a second and missed the shot.

I heard "I'M BLIND, I'M DEAF, I WANNA BE A REF" last night. I thought it was funny.

Thanks bob jenkins. I knew it was somewhere, but I couldn't find it in the rulebook, or casebook.
