Legal or not
A1 picks up his dribble to pass to A2. A2 doesn't see the pass as they turn away. After passing the ball A1 runs and grabs the errant pass. What do you have if anything?

It is a double dribble of you feel the pass was clean and picked up. If you at all feel like A1 tried to pass and just slipped out of his hand and A1 essentially fumbled the ball, then what A1 did was legal. Another HTBT (Had to be there) situation.

There is (or was) a specific case play on this.
