It's not as long ago as you think. I believe the mechanic changed around 1999-2000.

Arrow is set toward opponent basket when you place ball at disposal of the thrower in AFTER the FTs.

One only needs to remember three things to set the AP Arrow:
1) The most common way to set the AP Arrow is when a Player gains PC of the Ball after the Jump Ball to start the 1st QT (NFHS and NCAA Women's) or 1st Half (NCAA Men's) or any OT Period. 2) The Ball is placed at the Disposal of the Shooter for a Common Foul when the Bonus FT is in effect. 3) At this point the Rules Books (NFHS, NCAA Men's, NCAA Women's) define the three situations that require the AP Arrow to be set when the Ball is placed at the Disposal of the Thrower. In other words, for any situation not covered by the two situations for which I have stated above. But there is an extremely rare situation which is not covered in the rules, and it is a situation I have never seen happen in the 46 years that I have been officiating. And of course there is a box of fine Cuban cigars (fat chance I am going to give away one Cuban cigar let alone a whole box, ![]() MTD, Sr.

The Harlem Globetrotters are in town, playing in an outdoor stadium and filled the game ball with helium. When the official tosses the ball it continues to rise, straight up. The jump ball hasn't ended, so everyone waits.

I began in late 80's and I can't remember ever handing the ball on first shot. I do remember lots of other strange things, fore court, no TO at 4 or 8 second count on throw in/bc count.
