HAPPY 125th BIRTHDAY BASKETBALL!!

On this date in 1891 Dr. James Naismith introduced his new game of Basket Ball along with his Thirteen Rules of the game.

I am sure that Billy Mac can post a copy of the Original Rules in this thread.

Hmmmm....I always thought it was on the 21st of December. I have a relative with the same birthday and I have always congratulated him on being born the same day as basketball..... I've been wrong for about 15 years (some coaches would argue much longer than that)!

Wikipedia says that Dr. Naismith introduced the game on December 29, 1891, while an article in Mass Moments (Mass Moments: First Game of Basketball Played in Springfield) states that the first game was on December 21, 1891.

None-the-less, December 2016 is the 125th birthday of our great game of Basketball.

P.S. Per the Basketball Hall of Fame: The first game was played on December 21, 1891.

Mark, how long after the initial 13 rules were formulated did you add the Three Seconds violation to the list?

Three seconds was not my idea. I have not called three seconds in 50 years even though I have been officiating since 1971.

Engineers should be better at math. Maybe you need to recalibrate your slide rule.

Maybe in those five years before he started to ref it was his wife that kept calling three seconds?

Now you know my opinion of three seconds.

Naismith didn't have an opinion on it either.

You're damn right I can, because I was there. I held the step ladder while Jimmy nailed the peach baskets to the walls. He borrowed my pencil to write down the original thirteen rules.
