Who tossed?
Was thinking back to the days when a jump ball was administered for every held ball. What I can't remember is which official tossed? Always the referee or the calling official? Just curious.

Whoever was the better "tosser" (British slang term). ;)

I believe the rule is the same as it is currently...the referee has the authority to designate which official tosses the ball for any jump-ball situation.
Interestingly, the jump-ball can be administered by any member of the crew, but by rule the referee is specifically responsible for administering the alternating-possession throw-ins to start each quarter (other than the first). |

The start of each Quarter and Half, and all OT periods were started with a JB administered by the R. Now, I do not have access to my attic (Billy Mac and Junior know why) so I am unable to confirm with old Mechanics Manuals, but if my memory serves me correctly, as far as Two-Man Mechanics were concerned, the change from Left-Handed (Cadillac) Mechanics to what we use know know coincided with the adoption of the AP Arrow. That said: 1) JBs at the Center Circle was administered by the T at the time of the JB. 2) JBs at the FT Circles were administered as follows: a) FT Circle to the Right of the Table by the T. b) FT Circle to Left of the Table by the Left.
