The Madness Begins...

My wife's life as a referee widow begins. Just received my first batch of assignments for the season. First games will be Thursday, October 20. Junior High Boys/Girls double header. 45 minute commute. $90 plus mileage. Two-man crew, short court.

When does your season start?

OKREF Tue Oct 04, 2016 02:20pm

November 1

Mark Padgett Tue Oct 04, 2016 05:32pm

Where do you live that you get assigned to a JH game 45 minutes away....and get mileage for it???

Madness, I say. Madness!

November 21 is the start unless I get an earlier college game.

Peace

Been working our girls travel league on Sundays for 3 weeks now. First JH Boys game is 11/29.

bballref3966 Wed Oct 05, 2016 10:58am

First junior college (exhibition) game on October 22. We'll see from there.

Rich Wed Oct 05, 2016 11:44am

First game is November 15.

My last HS football assignment (as of right now) is November 4.

I'd be happy if hoops didn't start till mid-December.

Pantherdreams Wed Oct 05, 2016 11:54am

First games Nov. 11-13 weekend. HS Boys/Girls invitational tournament. Going to do 4 games over the Friday and Sat. Normally not the way I would want to start but lowest level HS games possibly in the region (most good MIddle School teams would beat them) so the pace won't be torrent.

I live in Central MO. I have JH games that are farther than that. $90 per two games and 50 cents per mile.

THIS.

(And the fact it's $45 each for middle school games —and more for a DH, in fact, than for a freshmen DH here!)

Inquiring minds would like to know! Might be ready for a move too :D

I used to work MS rec games at an MS about 6 blocks from my house. Since I was also the scheduler for that rec organization, I would schedule myself for a full day of games on Saturdays during the season. I didn't get any mileage but I did get to go home for lunch between games. :)

From tone of some posts after this, maybe we got it ok in MO. Swmo here, we do $40 for 6 min quarters, $50 for 7, $60 for 8, plus mileage. So generally JH DH's are around $100.

My first one of those was around first week of sept and depending on the conference, some schools will still be doing JH into late Feb. JV/V starts around a month from now.

You have it really good. The going rate for MS games around here is $25-$35, some with mileage, some without.

Camron - when I did MS games for TBA (Tigard Basketball Assn.) we paid $27.00 per game - no mileage. The games were "short" and on small courts. The only bad part of this was when you had games at Fowler MS (three courts) because the gym floor is tile, not wood. It's not really great for your knees. On Saturdays, games started at 9:00 and were scheduled to start every hour and ten minutes later (six minute quarters, five minute halftime). The last game of the day started at 4:00 so we were finished a little after 5:00. That made for a schedule of 7 games. As I alluded to in an earlier post, I would work six of those games taking off the one at 12:30 for lunch. I had to be back on the court at 1:40. Not a problem since it took me about five minutes to get home.

Season #5 started for me back on September 20. The local public middle schools play their girls basketball season from mid-September through October.

Just another one of the beauties of living in ALASKA. Heck, I even work a tournament or two each season where I get on a plane, fly to a remote part of the state, work up to 3 games a day for 3-4 days, and they cover all my travel expenses as well.

Not a bad gig if you can get it!

Ok, now that's fair given the situation you described. I take back my incredulous post. In fact, that sounds like a lot of fun!

I've learned a lot about the economics of sub-collegiate officiating in the past few years, including the fact that supply and demand of officials is a HUGE deal.

When in Nome, do as the Nomans do.
Is the Shishmaref Ref still active up there? Haven't heard from him on the Forum for a number of years.

Not sure who that is. Shishmaref is an even SMALLER village a couple hundred miles away from Nome.

I did a tourney in Nome a few years ago. And on the last day, a storm blew in and we didn't get out until Monday due to whiteout conditions that prevented any flying on Saturday night and all day Sunday. Yest ANOTHER one of the beauties of living in Alaska.
