Half-Court "Mechanics"?
I will be working a 3-on-3 half-court set this weekend. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any tips on where to stand, etc. would be appreciated!

I usually do the baseline.
1 official correct? |
Yes, 1 official.
That's what I was thinking. Thanks. |
Just referee. Do not overthink it just because it's a 3-on-3 tournament. Move to different positions based on ball location. Call obvious fouls, call really obvious violations. Keep the games moving.

I've never seen a manual for 1 official half-court mechanics, so I'm trying to conceptualize how I might work it. I don't know that I can come up with a definitive solution. The biggest advantage you have is that it is a 3-on-3 game so you don't have to worry too much about getting screened from seeing a play. I'm leaning toward working from the baseline, but I can advantages in working from the "trail" position as well. The nice thing about it being a half court game is you can move across the half court line without worrying about getting in the middle of a fast break the other way.
If both halves of the court are being used simultaneously (as in one game on each end), I'd definitely go with the baseline. |
Love these tournaments. If there is a lot of outside play/shooting try the Trail. If there is a lot of posting go endline. Good money and fast games. Enjoy and let us know how it goes.

Mechanics wise I would stay on the end line and work the Lead position back and forth. Should be easy to referee drives to the basket and hopefully the three point line which is where most of the plays will happen.

In FIBA 3 on 3 world championships they use two officials. Below is a video you can probably see the advantages/disadvantages of each position. With 1 person I would have say you would have to be baseline and active but that that is just me . . .

Thanks for the input, guys. I ended up starting endline and working up to either "c". Worked well.
