Since this place is so boring, when is everyone's first meeting?

One of my association is having our first meeting October 14. We are not that far away. :D

Peace

Late October, I think. VA does not have Girls Fall Ball anymore, so we don't meet as often.

We had our first meeting September 15th. It was optional for those who wanted to help out at our annual training clinic. The clinic begins tonight. I'll be there helping out and collecting money, since I'm the treasurer.

Juulie,

Why do the new people have to meet early? What does your association accomplish by having different reporting times?

Peace

My LAST day is November 8! I am doing fall ball, then my team hits HS and I am on ice until March. I get to watch their HS games, but no coaching in prime bball time.

So just as you are getting started, I am on hiatus. Bummer for me, but I will get some well-needed rest. Been going year-round for 6-7 years, so my family will probably appreciate me having some more time on weekends.

The new people get a bigger packet with more stuff in it, since a lot of them need more info. They go over a lot of it in that frist meeting, and talk about how the association is run, and what folks can expect. Then they divide up into their various classes, and their teachers talk to them about what they will cover, attendance rules, and various business matters. It's usually just the very most basic stuff that the "oldsters" don't need.

Do the new people also come to the "experienced" refs meeting? It seems to me (not having done it) that they would gain from both. The first meeting could cover the basics, the second meeting what all involved need to have covered.

I wish we did league coaches meetings like this. Every season, same leagues, same rules, same stupid questions (then again, it's the same guy asking for the twentieth time in case the answer changed). But attendance is mandatory, so like a good soldier I go. HATE IT.

First meeting -- new people only.
Second meeting -- classes for new people as well as classes for 2nd, 3rd, and 4t/5th year folks at 6:30, and then full meeting at 7:15.
Third meeting -- Classes only
Fourth meeting -- classes at 6:30, meeting at 7:15

etc

And a mandatory rules clinic for everyone thrown in there somewhere early on.

Are the classes mandatory? And what do you discuss in these classes? How to officiate or do you go over rules?

The classes are mandatory. The first year is just de-mythologizing refereeing -- you know, stuff like, "You may think the rule is such and such but it's really so and so." And trying to get everyone on the same page as far as how tight and how loose the association wants us to be. There is a lot of time on the basics of rules, floor coverage, the signals, and other mechanics, how to work with a partner, and a sort of beginners trouble-shooting thread. Second and third year are mostly on the game management and coach relationship stuff, with plenty of time for rules discussions, and "What should I have done?" stuff. By the 4th and 5th year class, most have either gotten varsity status, or are working on Wednesday evenings, but the class is to cover stuff that Howard had gotten complaints about (always done anonymously), or for the students to ask about situations, or about something they've heard, but didn't understand.

The first, second and third year classes take the Part ! test home and do it and then go over it in class, before the association gives the Part !! test. After the Part II test, those classes go over the results, and make sure the students understand everything.

Until a ref gets varsity status, he or she must talk 10 different people into giving him or her an evaluation of a game, to turn in. 10 per year required. After varsity status, the association gets the evaluation stuff covered somehow.

Which reminds me, I need to go e-mail Howard that I WANT evaluations this year. I don't want any coasting!

And Jeff, thanks for asking. This is my 2000th post!! Not as commendable as mick's 34 years of marriage, but still a minor accomplishment.
