I agree with Chuck's analysis.

On #3 -- I don't think that the violation should be called on this play -- it was obviously the first of multiple FTs and A1 didn't get any shooting or rebounding advantage here. (I'm assuming the violation hasn't been an issue elsewhere in the game.)

The advantage Bluiett gained was he couldn't keep his foot legally behind the stripe until the ball contacted. Make them balance up and shoot the ball--it's not second graders who can't hoist it up there otherwise.

I've seen enough of these passed on in the last month to realize it's becoming philosophy. Baffles me--Seriously, what do you tell the opposing coach when he questions?

Sorry buddy that isn't the way the game is being called nowadays. This would not be called in the NBA or NCAA game and less and less in HS.

Coaches make comments at those levels if their toe is on the line. To me this is like an out of bounds call. If it is obvious it should be called. I am not losing my credibility to make someone else happy.

My point exactly.

In this case, the shot was missed and it was the first of two, so it's irrelevant. But that's an obvious violation and everyone in the arena knows it. If that shot goes in or it's the second shot, the shooter commits that violation, and AremRed doesn't call it, what does he plan to tell the opposing coach when he's raising hell?

I have never been told to pass on an obvious violation. And this is certainly not one I have ever been scolded for at the varsity, or college ranks.

I'm pretty sure the NBA has the same rule for the shooter -- but no one usually cares. (Shaq got called a few times back when he was with the Lakers after coaches made an issue of the fact he was stepping over on every shot.)

I called a violation very similar to this in a BV game early in the season directly in front of an opposing coach at the end of 1st half. He yelled for it and I called it at nearly the exact time. As my partners and I were walking into the locker room, one of my partners told me never to call that again and I shouldn't even be looking there. Now, he's got 30+ years of experience and half of that doing college games, but I disagree with that philosophy.
If I hadn't of called it, I would have had some explaining to do to that coach. I've continued to call it as the rule says to.

Exactly! If the powers that be don't want that called, they can change the rule.

The last thing we need is to need a secret decoder ring to know which rules are rules and which ones are not. One of my pet peeves is people who make things up...either to call or to not call....that have no basis in the rules even by way of liberal interpretation.

Was your partner telling you this because you called it from T and he was C? In that case he has a point, but if the violation was so obvious that you and the coach could see if from T then he should be calling it, and I don't have a problem with you calling it either (again, if the violation was egregious).
