Video Request: Indiana vs Purdue
 
The goaltending/basket interference call against Purdue in the final minute of the second half.

Looking for a rule reference to go along with it. Was it the right call?

No. It was not the right call. It was called with 7.1 seconds remaining in game. Purdue down by 2. It was a good block. The kid hit the rim on the way to the ball but that is nothing. He got the ball before it contacted backboard. Ball not on way down.

Thank you for the exact time. The ball was on the way up, was not in the cylinder, and hadn't hit the backboard yet.

Is this relevant in college? I thought only the NBA had the rule that you can't touch after the ball hits the backboard?

Yes, If any portion of the ball is above the rim it is deemed, by rule, to be on its downward flight. It's goaltending if a player touches it after it hits the backboard if it has a chance to go in.

Not so sure about that, as the ball was going to hit the rim if the ball had not been touched. Or it would have been one of the worst shots in layup history.

What I said was that it was a good block. Shot clock did or would have expired but for the goaltending call. Purdue would have had a chance to tie or win with 7.1 left. Goaltending call made it 4 point game.

Every time I see a game with Teddy V on it I can't help but think he sure likes to put on a show. I may be wrong but there's something about games he does that I can't put a finger on.

Yes it was going to expire, but if the ball hits the rim there is no shot clock violation, that was my only point.

I also think the rule helps create this situation as it there is now a backboard element to this violation potentially.

He may have thought it hit backboard first or player hitting rim on way to ball could have made him react. Who knows. Tough call for Purdue. It happens.
