Fix this?

GV Conference (District) Championship. V scores to tie game with 50 seconds left. With 17 seconds on clock H scores a 2 point basket from just inside the foul line. As V rushes the ball up the new Trail checks clock and notices that the clock operator has added 3 points rather than 2 and is showing a 3 point lead. (ie... scoreboard incorrect by 1 point).

What do you do?

I would stop the game immediately and get the scoreboard corrected. You don't want the team thinking it must attempt a 3 to tie. Yes, they have the inconvenience of inbounding again, but I believe that is the lesser evil.

Fix right away in this case. The only way I would wait if it looked like the offense had an imminent attempt at a shot.

End-of-game situation like this, fix it right away, unless someone has an immediate scoring opportunity.

2 minutes in to the game, or at any point in a blowout... fix it at the next dead ball or at the next whistle.

The later situation happened to me in a blowout game a few weeks ago... I decided to wait for the next whistle, but the table corrected it before I had to.

Our scoring personnel often make mistakes as they are volunteer parents or high school brothers or sisters of players. It is something that our officials really have to watch because the parents are all over scoring mistakes, especially when it involves a score by their kid. We fix ASAP.

You certainly got that right. And it's not just a murmur through the crowd, it's parents screaming at the officials, coaches, and table, with absolutely no lag time. They scream louder at a scoreboard mistake than they do at a supposedly botched block/charge call.

I won't stop the game just because parents are screaming about the score. As noted earlier, if it's an end-of game situation, I will stop immediately. If not, I'm going to wait until the next whistle or run by the table and try to do it verbally on the fly.

Screaming parents don't affect how I deal with this for a variety of reasons.

No Hurry, I'll Get To It ...

Agree, but, at least, the screams get our attention.
