New Jersey-out of bounds?

VIDEO: This N.J. girls basketball shot got stuck on the top of the backboard, then fell through | USA Today High School Sports | USA Today High School Sports

Watch this clip from a game in New Jersey.Isn't the ball out of bounds?

It appears to me to have hit the support so yes, OOB.

Edit: If it didn't, it's good since it has to go over the top to be out. Touching is fine.

from the article:

Steinert coach Kristin Johnson told MaxPreps, which also reported on the magical basket. “The new rule this year includes the top of the backboard as in bounds.
New rule?

I do have to give her credit for knowing the rule, though.

We add a new rule. Since we cant know for sure if it hit that support bar which caused it to come forward and score lets blow it and give them one point. That way neither team feels completely screwed...

JK!

Same story and misinformation about a new rule repeated on Maxpreps.

Hard to tell if it contacted the supports upon initially going up there.

Score the basket--did not touch the support.

The sides of a rectangular backboard are in-bounds (i.e., a rectangle has 4 sides).

I do not see it hit anything. But the camera angle does not do this play any justice.

Peace

The top of the backboard is inbounds, and I agree that you can't tell if it hit the supports on the way up based on the camera angle. That being said, I don't believe that it hit a support to make it fall off the top of the backboard and go through the hoop.

I think the biggest factor in determining whether this is a valid basket or not, is the score. The team who made it is already down 23 points to start the 4th quarter. Give the girl a little love, and 2 points in the book!! :D

The lady is partially correct it's actually a point of emphasis this year, not a new rule. :D
