Exclamation NBA – 12/4 - Phoenix vs Washington – DOG T (video added)

Wizards up 108-106 w/ Phoenix at the FT line w/ 8.8 secs left in 4th qtr.

Between FTs, the Wizards bring in Ryan Hollins (7 ft) to rebound in case Phoenix intentionally misses their last FT. Phoenix counters by bringing in Markeiff Morris (6’10”). As they are getting in position in the lane, Morris decides he wants to go to the other side of the lane. Holland follows. Morris now decides he wants to cross again. Hollins follows. Referees tell Morris to knock it off and get in position for the FT. Morris continues to try and switch sides after being warned. Referee Monty McCutchen has had enough of Morris’ shenanigans. He approaches the table, points at the Phoenix bench, gives them their second DOG for the game – Whack!

Washington misses FT anyhow but eventually wins the game.

Reminded me of the batter who kept changing sides on the ambidextrous pitcher…somehow, the official needs to take charge and end the craziness, and McCutchen (23rd yr) took care of business.

NBA accountabiity website

The NBA has a publicly viewable website where they scrutinize plays that occur in last 2 minutes of every game (and complete overtimes) where margin is under 5 points at 2:00 minute mark. Includes pertinent videos.

My Way (Frank Sinatra, 1969)

I don't know if my idea for handling this would be correct by the NFHS, but this is what I would do: Lowest table side space (defense), "Who want this? Fine. Don't move". Second lowest table side space (offense): "Who wants this. Fine. Don't move". Move over to other side and ask the same questions. Move up the lane if necessary. Any continued jockeying around would be a delay of game technical foul by first team to move from an "assigned" space.

10-1-5-B: A team shall not: Allow the game to develop into an actionless contest, this includes the following and similar acts: Delay the game by preventing the ball from being made promptly live or from being put in play.

I'm grasping at straws here, but it's the best I've got.

Monty was very patient. I assume because he did not want to T up a player in that situation. Took charge though. That's why he's one of the best.

To be fair, I doubt you're going to have anything other than NBA doing this clown-fest. Handled well, imo.

I think the mindset is the defense should pick first since they have positional advantage.

That's my approach and how I've handled it the 2 or 3 times it has been a problem.

I would have thought the other way -- wouldn't you allow the defense the opporitunity to match up against the player that they want in this instance? That seems to be how McCutchen approached it, otherwise he would have told the Wizards player to pick a spot.

You are right, that's what I meant. I misread Adam's post. Defense will get the last choice.

Is there anything in any of the rule books about who gets to choose? (I know baseball addressed the ambidextrous pitcher vs. switch hitter "problem" by making a specific rule about who has to choose first.)

No (NFHS, NCAAW, and, I think, NCAAM. Don't know NBA).

I (would) go from lowest spot to highest spot.

Pick A Spot ...

... because the defense has to be there (unless they're down to only one player) in the lowest spot. The offensive player in the second spot doesn't have to be there at all.
