Loose Ball play High School
A1's pass is tipped and A2 and B2 both go for the ball. B2 slides to the floor and secures the ball,A2 lands on top of him approximately the same time he secures it. Do you have a whistle, if so, what for and enforcement? If you have a foul on A2, it would be their 7th foul.

Team A retains control until the player from Team B secures it. The official must ajudge what happened first--the foul or B2 gaining control. If the foul was first, then it is a team control foul and no FTs are awarded. If B2 got the ball and then got fouled, bonus FTs are awarded due to it being the team's 7th foul of the half. The sentiment is understood. Players can't jump on an opponent just because both are going after a loose ball.

Yet at least once every season I have a coach tell me I cant call a foul because "the ball was loose".

Kind of like a cornerback who times his defense on a pass. If you're just a little off (early), you're liable for defensive pass interference. It's a risk you accept. So, too, is the situation for a player diving for a loose ball; the hustle is to be commended, but if you get there second....foul. |
