I didn't see the whole report on Baseball Tonight last night, but hey did a segment on check swings and the basic jist of the segment was that no where in the OBR does it discuss what a check swing is or how an umpire is supposed to rule on it. Did anyone see this and any comments??

9.02(c) covers this in detail.

That's what I thought. That is why I was wondering if anyone saw the piece and could tell me what they were talking about.

I didn't see the report. However, 9.02(c) does not at all cover exactly what constitutes a checked swing. The only judgment to be made is whether or not the batter attempted to strike at the ball, which can be different from umpire to umpire. It doesn't talk about broken wrists, or breaking the plane of the plate, or any other easily recognized trigger for calling a checked swing a strike. Perhaps that's what they were talking about? Perhaps one of the regulars here with access to the ML Umpire's Manual could tell us if there is any guidance there.

Jim...

I only saw about the last two minutes of the report and I think that that was what they were talking about, that no where does is tell the umpires what exactly contitutes an "attempt" and that basically if a batter just flinched at a ball with the bat, an umpire could consider that an attempt, ring em up and it would be alright since there are no set guidelines.
