How did U4 miss this? What else was he looking at? I'm assuming from the very end of the video that when they made the appeal to 3rd he indicated "safe" and it was that call that was appealed to NY. But, jeez, even in a 2 man game PU would be watching for this

Just being lackadaisical, watching ball then play at second and then being on the OF side of the bag and not clearly seeing where or if runner tagged. Even in 2-man PU may have difficulty getting angle on 3b and missing tag.

Having said that, you would expect that at that level, it shouldn't have been missed. It happens.

Replay?

New York said the play was not reviewable. Upon initial appeal the umpire called the runner safe, then the umpires got together and watched the replay on the big screen. That is when the decision was made to overturn the safe call.

I used to be able to watch MLB umpires (ostensibly the best out there) and glean situational things which I could apply to my High School officiating. MLB's replay system and it's implementation has rendered watching MLB games basically useless as a learning tool. It's a shame. Just my opinion.

This was a case where Kansas City shot themselves in the foot by replaying on the big screen so the umpires could see that they messed up. Without that, the call probably would have stood.

So replay did what it is supposed to do; correct an obviously wrong call.
Just did not happen as intended.
