Infield Fly Rule Question

Runners on first and second, less than two outs.

Batter hits a pop up about a third of the way up the first base line. Pitcher and first baseman do not move. The catcher comes out to try and make the play. Never really "settles" under the ball, and it falls in fair territory.

Umpire does not call IF, which I initially agreed with. My dad made the argument, however, that it was a routine pop up...that the pitcher or first baseman SHOULD have caught.

Thoughts?

The poor guy was the catcher on the play. He sustained a ruptured biceps tendon for his efforts. Our pitcher threw his back out earlier in the game, thus couldn't make any sudden movements and try to go after it. It was a rough night on the diamond.

The pitcher threw his back out and was still pitching? Who is in charge here?

I should probably have mentioned this is 12" softball we're playing, not baseball. The guy made it through the 4th inning before giving up. He even took his at bats so we didn't have to take the automatic out. Walked once.

Our pitcher is 27. My dad is 57. And give my dad credit. He finished the game after this happened...I think it was the second inning.

In the case of IFF, the rule is the same...

But for future reference, softball questions belong in the softball forum. In a great many cases, the rules are not the same between MLB and Slow-pitch softball.

Duly noted. I figured the Infield Fly rule was universal.
